ARITA BUTTONS

Some of the finest porcelain buttons of any era were from the Japanese town of Arita.  Made from a special, silky smooth clay, they are usually square, rectangular or in realistic shapes, but very seldom round.  Molded in relief, with sometimes astonishing detail, then colored and glazed, many were then further finished with touches of gilding.  The decorating on these buttons was done with perfect accuracy and delicate detail.  Both potters marks and the word ‘Japan” are impressed in the backs.  Arita buttons were made as early as the 1930s although most were imported in the 1960's.  Aritas have recently become very sought after and prices have risen tremendously.
